So you are thinking about taking basketball seriously or you already are, while you know to get better you have to work on your game and play every day to beat the competition. What are the benefits of playing every day besides having fun and improving?

We are going to take a look at the pros of playing basketball daily for a couple of hours. There are two parts with 14 pros and cons in each article. 1 – Fast Skill Improvement

It obvious playing basketball every day is going to help you improve your game. Most professionals know they have to put in skill work almost every day, even on game day. When combining individual drills such as shooting and dribbling drills every day alongside pickup or league games, you are on your way to improving your game at a very fast rate.

I have seen players who couldn’t make the basketball team one year and then the following year be the star player on the team just because they improved their game in this manner. The drawback is you are investing a lot of time. Although if you love basketball then it won’t seem like work. But it can be difficult to maintain consistency.

My advice is to stay consistent and to help you stay consistent, have a partner/friend with the same goal in mind. Then you can hold each other accountable. This was such a case for myself during my senior year in high school. I had people come up to me and couldn’t believe how much better I had improved after the summer playing basketball every day leading up to my senior year. But I did it the right way.

Here’s what I did to become an excellent shooting guard.

  • In the morning I shot around 300 shots on my basketball hoop in my backyard before I went to go play pickup basketball.
  • I would then go play ball at the YMCA playing pickups games.
  • While I was not playing in a game, I would observe what other players were doing that worked for them and apply it to my own game.
  • I would then get home and later that night, any shots I missed in the pick-up games that day I would work on in my backyard making sure I shot 300 more baskets made.
  • I continued this all summer, such a simple approach that made me a very good shooting guard.

2 – Basketball Is Fun

Basketball is a fun game, you can pretty much find a basketball hoop anywhere and play for hours and not even realize you are getting a workout or getting into shape. Basketball can be easy to play every day if you’re having fun doing it. If you start to get bored of regular pick up games, there’s always back yard game such as horse and 21 you can play. 3 – Lose Weight

I talked about this before in other articles that I have written but playing basketball if you are watching your diet is a very easy way to lose weight. You can lose anywhere from 400 to 800 calories an hour easily playing full-court basketball. If your goal is to lose 10lbs and you love playing basketball every day you should have no problem doing so in 4 to 6 weeks easily.

4 – Meeting New Friends

I can’t tell you how many people I have met through the game of basketball. Guys who I have been close friends with for many years that I met on the court.

Playing basketball you can meet someone new and know their name really quickly. The next time someone new happens to be on your pick up team that you don’t know, introduce yourself and ask what their name is. Now you have open the door to talk to them after the game and get to know them.

It also a great way to network with people and find gyms that people are playing at, sometimes you can get bored playing at the same gym and you want to branch out and play elsewhere. I always wanted to play against the best competition as I knew this was key for myself to get better at basketball. The only way to do that was to have an in and play where the competition was at its highest.

I have played on many senior men’s teams from people who were interested in making a team and had asked if I wanted to play because they knew I had a game. Basketball is awesome in that regard, doors just open out of love for the game.

You will find that if your playing basketball every day you won’t have to try too hard to make friends it is just going to happen, you will see the same people and eventually start talking to them.

 

5 – Relieves Stress

Basketball is a form of exercise that will relieve stress and improve your mood. Playing basketball is fun especially when your playing with guys you know. It is a great way to take a break from life and play basketball for a few hours, not having to think about anything. You are in that moment you are not thinking about the stresses of your own life, but to win this game that your playing in right now. That is why sports, in general, is awesome, I have had many stressful days, but once I get on the court, I completely forget about it for a couple of hours. It can really help you think about a situation differently after a few hours of playing.

I can honestly say that if I wasn’t playing basketball to relieve stress or to keep in shape, I would probably be some fat guy drinking and smoking all day. I can credit a lot of my healthy habits for the most part because of the game of basketball.

 

6 – Staying Out Of Trouble

The game of basketball has helped thousands of kids stay out of trouble. Basketball is a great way to keep kids off the street and focus their energy on the game. It may be the most inexpensive sport to play out of any of the major sports.

There are many ways basketball can relate to and prepare for life’s obstacles. Basketball builds confidence and would allow someone who is feeling peer pressured about something to stand up for themselves.

Basketball can build a person’s Teamwork skills, decision-making skills and how to work hard for a common goal among your teammates. Sound familiar, yup a career in the workforce.

When a teenager can focus their energy on the game and play with friends with the same interest and values that relate to them, then they are able to keep out of trouble by avoiding negative influences.

 

7 – Gets You Out Of The House

I remember I was blown away when I saw a commercial on TV by the government to get kids to go outside and play. It was a public service announcement as more and more kids were staying inside on their phones tablets and video games instead of going outside to play. I thought it was a joke but thought back to the students I work with at the local high school in the city. I can not believe it came to this.

Basketball is a great way to get out of the house and get some exercise. You may completely forget what you were mad about in the first place after your done.

8 – Builds Confidence

Sports, in general, builds confidence, playing basketball you going to notice significant changes in your body both physical and mental. You are playing a sport that has many variables to the game at any given moment that you need to adapt to and make the right decision. Even making the best decisions during basketball doesn’t guarantee that you will win. That’s how difficult the game can be.

Adapting to these changes and learning from trial and error is going to help you understand what works and what doesn’t. On top of that you find out a lot about yourself, sport, in general, brings out the raw nature of a human being. When you get pretty good at basketball, you start to think you can beat anyone and win any game. This transfers over to life, you are not scared to challenge yourself because you been in difficult situations where you have worked through problems as they come.

After you have been playing basketball every day, word will get around that you can play. When I was in high school basketball was very popular in our school so you can imagine how cocky I was walking through the halls during the season especially when your team is one of the best in the city. 

 

9 – Achieve Your Goals

If your playing basketball every day you are going to achieve your goals a lot quicker. If you are wanting to score 20 points a game for your High School team or win a championship. You’re going to have to play every day and work on your game with no days off. If your goal is to be a better shooter or be a lockdown defender, there is not a faster way then to play every day and make the time on the court count.

Setting small goals to reach the ultimate goal is important. I wanted to be the best shooter in the city that was the goal. To achieve that goal I decided that I needed to shoot at least 500 shots a day no matter what. Then It was 500 makes. I knew if I could do that consistently I was on my way. I was the type of shooter that saw the results immediately and when I was put a huge workload on my shot, there were rarely games where I missed a lot, in fact sticking with the above protocol I was dominant over my competition and became a lights out shooter.

 

10 – Memories

Playing basketball has provided so many memories that I will never forget, I could remember our senior year for 3 months straight we played basketball 6 days a week with league games and tournaments and practicing through those 2 months. I felt like I played semi-professional. It was great, there were times I would even go shoot around on my day off, not realizing then I should have probably rested.

Championships, trophies and recognition, no one can take that away from you. This all comes from a will to get better and practice every single day for hours at a time. Playing basketball every day will get you there but you have to love the game and love hard work or else your going to fail at being consistent and fail at accomplishing anything related.

If you want real results, you almost have to obsess about your game. I always told the kids I coached if you want to be a good shooter you have to eat breathe and shoot a basketball till your so sick of it. Then when your sick of it keep shooting some more.

11 – Stay Connected With Friends

Basketball is a great way to stay connected with friends, people you haven’t seen in a while and even family. A lot of friends and former co-workers I stay connected to this day because of basketball and we don’t miss a beat when we see each other on the court when its basketball season.

I have a friend who I have known since kindergarten, and he called me up one day, we had not spoken in ten years. He told me he had a gym at a local high school and he needed a couple of guys. You can guess what I did the following week. No weird feelings, no awkwardness, just catching up and having fun.

Life happens, it always amazes me how we can graduate and lose touch with so many people we went to school with for 12 years. Basketball is better than Facebook to stay truly connected with someone. I bet over half your friends on Facebook you don’t even talk to in person.

 

12 – Great Physique By Default

Playing basketball by default will leave you with a great physique, I didn’t really work out much if at all when I started to take the game seriously, I just played a lot of basketball and was cut with a six-pack. My friends also, we would compare bicep size, abs, and legs size. We were young, does it help to have good genetics? Sure.

For the most part if your playing basketball every day you’re going to build relative body strength and tone your muscles. Will you get bigger arms from playing basketball? No. Many people believe that playing basketball builds muscle, but that is a misconception. 13 – Improve Your Athletic Ability For All Sports

If you are just starting to take the game of basketball seriously and you are playing a lot more, you’re going to find that your footwork will improve along with your movement efficiency. Basketball can be a sprint to a jog to a jump to a cut to a sprint again. These will all work on the necessary athletic movements for any sport.

When I was younger I use to dunk on adjustable rims a lot. I got to the point where I was jumping very high for someone at the time that was 14. Before basketball season started in my senior year I was no longer able to jump any higher than I could at 14 because I had stopped practicing dunks and jumping altogether. I joined the volleyball team cause I wanted to increase my vertical jump and the coach told me that I could increase it 6 inches if I played. I didn’t really believe him but I tried out and made the team.

Sure enough, I gained 6 inches and was able to jump and hang on the rim easily at 5’9 when the season was done. I credit basketball dunking on those low rims to help me with my two-step approach in the power position in volleyball. It helps me hit the ball well, it really felt natural and I picked up the game fairly quickly as it was my first time playing a full year. I had tried in recent years to play but just ended up quitting because I wasn’t any good and found it boring. 

Your ability to gain this many inches will vary and depend on what you did in the past, plus genetics. There may come a point with your footwork, vertical jump, and speed that it levels off and you don’t see any more changes after playing basketball every day. You will need to do some exercise drills such as plyometrics or lift weights to further develop the athletic movements that you want to become more explosive.

14- Get Noticed

After playing basketball every day while improving your game and becoming a star player at your local YMCA or High School, you are going to have a lot of people ask you that are not as good as you are, to run with them in pick up games. This is always a good feeling when you can walk in a gym that’s crowded and you have a few people waiting for next and they come up to you asking if you want to run with them. You remember when you were the guy asking the better players to run with you when you were young and still trying to get better.

I have also heard a few players who have been playing at local pickups games get asked to try out for the college team, and even one story of a guy years ago who played for the National Team For Canada. The story was he was in the university gym shooting around and the Canadian Team was stepping on the court to practice and needed a 10th player to run a scrimmage.

This guy had played for the local University and this is why they asked him. They ended up giving him a tryout that same year and he made the team. This guy shoots better then anyone in NBA2k, I have played basketball with him from time to time and he doesn’t miss and he’s in his mid 40’s.
