What Does “DNP” Stand For In Basketball?

So many basketball abbreviations, so many terms. The problem comes with most stats on the box score is, there is no reference to know what some of the abbreviations mean following the specific stat numbers. But the great thing about stats is you just have to learn it once and that’s it.

What Does” DNP” Stand For In Basketball? “DNP” in basketball is an acronym for Did Not Play. You will see this on the box score beside a player’s name who did not enter the game. It may be for a number of reasons from injuries to disciplinary actions or in some unpopular cases, load management. This is completely up to the coach’s decision.

A coach will add players to the lineup right before the game is about to start. Those players who are inactive due to injury or are not attending a game will be registered as “Out”.

More on DNP

A coach’s decision to not play a player in a game can be a number of factors, most coaches do not know if they are going to play every player on their roster who is dressed for the game. If the game calls for a nail bitter where teams are evenly matched some coaches will play 7 to 10 players of their roster out of the 15 that are allowed to dress.

When a player does not enter the game a single second he/she is registered as a “DNP” or otherwise know for Did Not Play – Coach’s Decision.

A player who is considered out due to severe injury or other reasons is considered OUT and must dress in street clothes. They may sit with the team, but may not enter the game at any time unless he is registered on the roster before the game is started and dresses in uniform thereafter.

Again DNP refers to players who were dressed to play but did not enter the game because the coach didn’t put the player in the game. It does not refer to players who are not dressed for the game and are injured.

Do the owners ever call the Coach out over not playing excellent shooters when they are suffering losses for it? Take Boston Celtics Coach vs Payton Prichard, I know just what I have seen recently about the coach, I don’t even know his name, Pritchard I have watched since his Oregon days. He is a fighter and a top of the page shooter. He should be helping the Celtics on the floor instead of cheering from the sideline. A DNP should not be by his name. He has many fans who make Coach and owners money. I am very disappointed with coaching staff
