5 Fouls

Generally, the rule of thumb in basketball is for every 8 minutes of play you get one foul. So for 40 minutes divide that by 8 this gives us five fouls. The NBA  is the only league where if a player commits 6 fouls he is fouled out but this is due in part of how long the game time is with 48 minutes of play at 12 minutes a quarter that gives the player a foul for every 8 minutes of play totaling 6 fouls. 48 divide by 8 gives you 6 fouls.

But let us take a look at what a foul is…

What Is A Foul?

A foul is anytime a player makes contact with the opposing player that results in a violation in the rule book that is considered a foul. When the referee blows the whistle the play stops on the court while the referee motions and signals to the scorekeeper’s desk for recording. They will use hand signals to demonstrate what foul type was in violation and will say the number of the player also for the scorekeepers to record and tally up fouls of personal and team fouls.

Types Of Fouls?

There are three types of fouls in a basketball game that referees will make a call on, which are personal fouls, flagrant fouls, and technical fouls.

Personal Fouls

These are the most common types of fouls you will see in a basketball. These are fouls common between two players making some form of illegal contact on the player with the ball attempting a shot or move. An example would be the illegal use of hands, pushing, holding, and charging.

Flagrant Fouls

These types of fouls are considered dangerous to the player and results in what is called a flagrant foul. Flagrant fouls can be deliberate or accidental but can be considered a flagrant. There are two types of flagrant fouls, flagrant 1 is unnecessary to contact like the swing of an elbow or hitting the player in the head when they go up for a layup. Flagrant 2 is unnecessary excessive contact like fighting.

Technical Fouls

These types of fouls are different and don’t involve any contact, players on the court, sitting on the bench and the coaches can get a technical foul. This can be a for profanity against the ref or other players, delay of game, too many men on the court, and taunting. The most common technical fouls are when a player gets a foul called on them and argues the call to the ref and using profanity in the same sentence.

Technical and flagrant fouls ball count as personal fouls which means if there are times you may receive two fouls one for the following question and a second follow-up the technical because you are arguing and the ref and they decide to give you a technical. In that case, if you had 3 fouls, adding an extra two fouls one for a personal foul and then one for the technical foul, you would then be considered fouled out.

 What Is A Team Foul?

In college basketball, a personal foul received by each player on the same team will count towards team fouls. For example, if 3 players on the same team all have one personal foul this will be count towards the team fouls and the team will have 3 fouls. Again if 4 players each have 2 fouls on the team, the team now has 8 fouls. Team fouls are important in a basketball game due to the bonus situation.

What Is A Bonus?

Team fouls are tracked for the purpose of the bonus situation in basketball games, the bonus is when a team reaches a certain number of fouls, the opposing team is then awarded free throws. The number of free throws depends on the league and its rule book. The bonus is apart of all basketball leagues and levels of play. In a college basketball game, the bonus happens when a team reaches 7 fouls. The opposing team will go to the line and shoot what is called a one and one. This means that if the player makes their first free-throw they will shoot a second. If they miss their first free throw they will commence playing and the teams will rebound and jockey for possession of the ball.

The team will shoot a one and one on fouls 7,8 and 9. When a team has 10 fouls they will be in double bonus and shoot two free-throws no matter if they miss or make the shot on their first attempt.
