I practice Dribbling everyday Still No Progress, Help! | Tips

I dribble every day for I’ve made no progress. What can I do?

This was a question that gets asked a lot on the r/basketballtips on Reddit. I have always felt this way when I practiced dribbling when I was much younger, I would do all sorts of ball handling drills, dribbling drills and a ton of zigzag drills and never felt like I was getting any better. But if I practiced shooting, I would notice a difference the next day what gives? There are a couple of things that I did wrong. The first, why I made a lot of improvement in my shooting was I would take game situation shots, shots that I would use in a game, realistic shots. Even when I missed a shot in a game I would work on that shot countless times after in practice and try to perfect it.

You have to treat dribbling the same way, use dribble moves that you know you will use in a basketball game. Start off by keeping it simple you can do the method that I enjoy most, it works on one-dribble move a week. Practice a dribble move tirelessly until you get sick of it, for that a whole week until it becomes instinctual and you don’t have to even think about it. You could do this every week with a new move.

Every time you play you practice it, in a pickup game practice it against the competition. Continue until you do not even have to think about it.

Your second option is to set some cones up or chairs around the basket and practice by doing a variety of dribble moves, you can pick which ones you want to work on, each move can lead to a layup or shot.

Also, dribbling has a lot to with timing and reading the defense. Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant were not the best dribblers by any means, but they could read the defense better than anyone in the history of the game. You can’t sit there and think, that doing drills is all you need to do become an excellent dribbler and you will start crossing people up it just isn’t going to happen.

An excellent drill is if you have a partner you can do a drill that really helped myself with reacting to what the defense throws at you. Your partner will set up in front of you as you dribble and jump to either side forcing you to react with a dribble move to go by him. He will play dummy defense, and you can shoot the ball or lay it up. This will help with reaction time and adjusting quickly to what the defense gives you.

With anything you need to realize that it takes time and many hours to improve a skill. If it were that easy then basketball wouldn’t be a sport that people would play. Be patient work hard and think long term.

How long should I practice dribbling?

This will depend, You could do two dribbling workouts in a day one in the morning and one at night. That would speed up your progress, down below is an example video from Ryan Razooky youtube channel. If you can get in half an hour to an hour of practice a day that would be ideal. But what is more ideal is to stay consistent and do it every day.

 

 

Make sure you are consistent with dribbling workouts, this is the only way you will see improvements. If you’re not seeing improvements, you’re doing something wrong. Staying consistent is much hard than the workout itself.
